ED 205.3

Philosophy of Christian Education

3.0 Credit Hours

This course is designed to communicate discipleship in the home, in the church, and in the school. A philosophy, a history, and technique are covered using both theoretical and practical approaches to Christian Education. This course will cover everything from a church nursery, Sunday School, Junior Church, and mid-week children’s program to the local church Christian school and the role of the local church in the life of home schooling. Everything from writing curriculum to effective communication is covered. Same as CE 401.3.

ED 302.3

Teaching Techniques

3.0 Credit Hours

A study of principles basic to Christian teaching, including lesson plans, audiovisual techniques, and the organization and management of materials for effective classroom presentation. Same as CE 302.3.

ED 304.3

Teaching Mathematics

3.0 Credit Hours

A study of the trends, materials, and techniques for the teaching of mathematics in the elementary school. Pre-requisite or co-requisite ED 302.3

ED 306.3

Teaching Reading

3.0 Credit Hours

A course intended to give the prospective teacher the methods and materials necessary for developing students to read well. A study of phonics will be included, as well as ways of developing comprehension. Pre-requisite or co-requisite ED 302.3

Tests and Measurements

3.0 Credit Hours

A study of the theory and practice of educational evaluation, including constructing tests, using standardized tests, and utilizing test results. Pre-requisite or co-requisite ED 302.3

Teaching Music in the Elementary School

2.0 Credit Hours

A study of the methods and materials for the elementary school music classroom. The organization of the music curriculum by the classroom teacher will be stressed. Published sources of music teaching methods will be utilized, in conjunction with the development of the teacher’s own creative skills. Song repertoire, basic music fundamentals, and instruments unique to children’s skills will be introduced. The student will be introduced to a Biblical philosophy of music, with a view toward correct practice in the ministry. Pre-requisite: MU 122.1 or equivalent.

Teaching Science

2.0 Credit Hours

This course includes techniques and materials for teaching science in the elementary school.

Children’s Literature

2.0 Credit Hours

A survey of reading materials available to children and methods of evaluating literature for school and home.

Physical Education and Health in the Elementary School

2.0 Credit Hours

A course designed to prepare the prospective teacher in the methods and programs for a well-balanced physical education and health curriculum, including large and small group games, conditioning exercises, and care of the body God has given.

GE 100.2

Basic English

2.0 Credit Hours

An English Placement Test will determine the student’s level of entry into English courses. Basic English is designed for those students whose scores on the test indicate that they do not have sufficient skills to take GE 110.3. Hours do not count toward graduation requirements.
