MU 162.1

Piano Tuning and Repair II

1.0 Credit Hour

A course of study focusing on the student’s continued development of tuning skills as well as an introduction to basic piano repairs and adjustments for both vertical and grand pianos. Topics will include deep cleaning, action removal and installation, action repair and regulation, string replacement and pedal adjustments and repairs. Pre-requisite: MU161.1

MU 201.1

Voice Class II

1.0 Credit Hour

These classes are arranged according to demand. Material studied will be adapted to the student’s individual needs. Foundational instruction in correct posture, breathing and tone production, vocalizes for good vocal health, diction, and phrasing. Platform deportment and ministry focus with emphasis on sacred vocal literature.

Music Theory II

3.0 Credit Hours

Continued study of tonality from harmonic and linear perspectives, tracing chromaticism from basic modulations through advanced chromaticism of the 19th century. The second semester begins with the extended harmonies of the 19th century through the tonal ambiguity of impressionism and the new directions of the 20th and 21st centuries. Study of structural form including sonata, theme and variations, rondo, and fugue. Integrated approach includes analysis, writing, sight-singing, listening, ear training, and dictation. Pre-requisite: MU 112.3 or equivalent.

Song Leading and Church Music Administration

3.0 Credit Hours

A study of the development of an individual style that encourages enthusiasm and strong singing from the congregation, the study of traditional conducting patterns, the choosing of hymns and gospel songs for evangelistic services, handling of special techniques, and platform etiquette. A study of the philosophy, organization, leadership, and resources for using music in the ministry of the local church. Emphasis on criteria for leadership, congregational singing, copyright law, service planning, vocal and instrumental music (solo/ensemble), keyboard instruments, recruitment, and music library organization.

Hymnology

2.0 Credit Hours

The history and development of the hymn and hymn tunes from Bible times to the present, types of hymns and their uses, and analysis and interpretation of hymns and gospel songs. Parallel overview of development of western art music. Standard hymnals reviewed.

MU 218.2

Church Music Administration

2.0 Credit Hours

Biblical music philosophy is developed, as well as training in the setup and administration of the total music program in the local church.

MU 221.1

Piano Class II

1.0 Credit Hour

Beginning techniques are covered, including the understanding and practical application of music fundamentals as applied to the keyboard. A progressive competency in basic four-part hymn playing, major and minor scales and chords, and easy classical pieces is required. The student may be placed in MU 131.1, 132.1, 231.1, 232.1, 331.1, 332.1, 431.1, or 432.1 (Piano lessons), depending on his progress and development. Course fee required.
