The Church Pianist
2.0 Credit Hours
Techniques and styles of intermediate/advanced hymn and gospel song accompaniment of congregational singing are studied, including octave movement in both the bass and soprano lines and chordal fill-in material. The history of evangelistic-style hymn playing is discussed, starting with its earliest use in large tent meetings and continuing to its current proponents and available resources. Emphasis is placed on the crafting of preludes, postludes, offertories, and vocal solo accompaniments. The responsibilities of choral rehearsal collaboration are discussed, as well as topics such as modulation, transposition, and chord substitution. Instruction is given pertaining to the pianist’s role in special services such as revival campaigns, weddings, funerals, and VBS. A certain level of keyboard proficiency is needed for this course; therefore, a student audition/evaluation by the instructor is required. Pre-requisite: MU 112.3.

Private or semi-private instruction is given to each student to develop proper piano technique, practice procedures, and musicality for the performing of classical compositions, gospel song and hymn arrangements; and to learn the basic fundamentals of congregational hymn playing. Private Lesson fee required.

Private instruction is given to each student in developing a proper and dependable technique. The student can apply this in the singing of the basic art song and sacred art song literature, as well as applicable literature from oratorio. The ministry of the gospel-song solo is also an important part of this instruction. Private Lesson fee required.

Foundational instruction in correct posture, breathing and tone production, vocalizes for good vocal health, diction, and phrasing. Platform deportment and ministry focus with emphasis on sacred vocal literature.

Choral Writing and Arranging
2.0 Credit Hours
Foundational elements of writing choral music in various voicings. Listening, singing, and analysis of model compositions. Exploration of various facets of creativity and craft. Applicable readings, including copyright laws. Extensive practice in arranging techniques. Pre-requisite: MU 212.3.
