The Need for Preachers and Christian Workers

Updated: Jan 14

Open book on a table with blurred text, warm bokeh lights in the background, creating a calm, reflective mood.

Every week, the college receives calls from churches and Christian schools around the country looking for pastors, church staff members, and Christian school teachers. Why is this so? Two thousand years ago, Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.” There has always been a great contrast between the harvest and the laborers, but the need today is greater than ever.

Some leave the Lord’s work like Demas did in 2 Timothy 4:10. The love for the world crept into his heart, and he eventually turned his back on the Lord’s work and his friends like the Apostle Paul. Sadly, this world has that same powerful draw today. Missionaries are coming off of the field. Pastors are leaving their churches and fewer people are in the shadows to replace them.

Some people argue with the Lord like Moses did in Exodus 3. God calls them, but they are quick to give excuses as to why they cannot serve Him. Thankfully, Moses came to his senses in Exodus 4, but many never go because they stay in Exodus 3. One of the most futile things you can do is argue with the Lord when He is clearly calling.

Some parents refuse to let their children consider the prospect of serving the Lord in the ministry. They have no problem with people talking with their children about being a nurse or a tradesman, but they take great exception when someone discusses the possibility of being a missionary or marrying a preacher. Parents are to protect and guide their children, not hinder them from following the Lord’s will. What if every parent were willing to put their children on the altar like Abraham in Genesis 22?

Some Christian teens have been blinded by the influence of social media and Hollywood. Entertainment has misguided them just like it did Solomon in Ecclesiastes 2. Mirth and pleasure lead to vanity and vexation of spirit. A Holy Ghost revival is the only thing that can awaken our teens to righteousness. At ABC, we believe God can send such a revival and expect Him to do something great.

While it is easy to be overwhelmed by the need for more preachers and Christian workers, we must continue to keep our eyes on the Lord of the harvest and the harvest itself. May God continue to strengthen the hands of the current labor force in ministry, and may we continue to ask him to send more laborers.

Since 1989, our single focus has been to train men and women for full-time Christian service. By God’s grace, we will keep it until Jesus returns.
